JAMESTOWN – ‘Hands On Jamestown’ will kick off a weekend of work Saturday as residents prepare for summer.
In addition to many projects hosted by the Jamestown Renaissance Corporation (JRC), one local business owner will be coordinating the cleanup of Jamestown’s AIDS Memorial Park on E. 3rd St.
“What we are going to try to do is at least get the paint and wood stained again,” said Steve Trapani. “I remember using this park back in the day when we had dances on Friday nights.”
Trapani said the lack of drainage seems like one of the park’s biggest problems.
“Hopefully, there will be something that we can come up with for a quick fix so that things can look better.”
The JRC is funding Trapani’s endeavor by buying paint and mulch.
“We’re going to bring our own tools,” Trapani said. “Anyone who wants to come down for an hour or two, feel free.”
The group will meet at the AIDS park at 8 a.m. Saturday.
Even if the weather dose not cooperate, Trapani said he will reschedule so that the park gets the attention it needs.
In the long term, Trapani hopes the park will be home to public gatherings and outdoor music.
A mural of Downtown Jamestown is also set to be redone sometime this summer.
City wide volunteers will work on a multitude of projects. A map on the JRC’s website outlines where most of the work will take place.
Participants are encouraged to pick up branches, leaves, sweep sidewalks and curbs.
Due to limited resources, workers are encouraged to use their own tools, gloves, and other equipment.
In addition, participants are encouraged to create brightly colored t-shirts to better stand out to motorists.
