Gerace Says Some Inmates Manipulating System To Avoid Prison

JAMESTOWN-Sheriff Joe Gerace says some of the overcrowding at the county jail stems from inmates who trying to avoid going to state prison.

“Some of it is manipulation, they’re trying to hold off because they want don’t want go to state prison,” said Gerace.

“They would rather stay in county jail where they can be close to family and friends,” the sheriff added.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Gerace says 312 inmates are currently on the jail’s roster but 25 of those inmates were doing time in Alleghany, Cattaraugus, and Wyoming counties due to overcrowding in Mayville.
