Lake Weeds, Algae Take Center Stage At Ellicott Town Meeting

ELLICOTT – A meeting to discuss an overabundance of weeds on Chautauqua lake in the Town of Ellicott took center stage Monday night.
Residents voiced concerns about the overabundance of algae that they said is creating horrible water conditions.
Many residents said they believed the weed harvesting by the Chautauqua Lake Association is not working well enough to deal with the problem.
Some in the town said they would like officials to apply for grant funding or find money elsewhere to implement herbicide application in the Celoron, Burtis Bay areas.
The town fears that if the lawsuit against the town of Ellery and the Department of Environmental Conservation from the Chautauqua Institution continued on, no herbicide applications would be likely approved in the future.
