ALBANY – Governor Cuomo announced Tuesday that a new statewide program, dubbed “Smart Street Lighting NY”, will call for at least five hundred thousand street lights throughout the State to be replaced with LED technology by 2025.
Cuomo said the program could potentially reduce energy consumption by the equivalent of nearly 45,000 households, which he expects will save taxpayers nearly $90,oo0 a year.
“This modernization program will help save taxpayer money, increase energy efficiency, and increase public safety through increased visibility,” Cuomo said, adding that it is a “win-win-win” for the State of New York.
Cuomo originally announced the program during his annual State of the State.
His goal is to reduce climate emissions by 40 percent by 2030, based on 1990 levels.
