State Lawmakers Could See A Big Pay Raise In The Next Few Years

ALBANY – New York State Lawmakers could see a major pay raise over the next three years.
This would be their first salary increase in 20 years. Lawmakers would see a 63% increase in their base salary from $79,000 to $130,000 in 2021.
On Thursday the state Compensation Committee, a panel of current and former comptrollers tasked with examining salaries for top state officials, made the recommendation.
The increase would be phased in over the next three years with a $110,000 raise in January 2019.
The recommendation, which will take effect January 1st unless lawmakers step in and change it, would come with significant strings attached for state legislators, who would be forced to limit their income from outside, private sources to 15 percent of their base salary starting in 2020.
The committee voted to approve the basics of its recommendation at a meeting Thursday, with a full report to follow by Monday.
Other statewide elected officials would also be in line for a raise under the plan.
New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s salary would go up $71,000 over the next three years. New York State Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul’s would also increase $68,500 over the same period.
