JAMESTOWN – Those seeking summer employment with the City of Jamestown will find more money in their paychecks this year as the city has increased its pay for temporary summer employees to $10.75 per hour.
“Due to the recent increases in the state minimum wage and vigorous competition in the local job market, the City of Jamestown will be paying $10.75 per hour to attract temporary summer workers in the Public Works and Parks, Recreation, and Conservation Departments” a released statement noted. “Both departments are still seeking temporary summer seasonal laborers, and the Parks and Rec Playground Program is seeking recreation attendants. The positions are open to students who are 18 years of age or older. In accordance with city hiring practices, preference will be given to residents of the City of Jamestown.
The temporary Public Works and Parks summer labor positions are scheduled as 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The types of work functions will include landscaping, parks maintenance, assisting with road repairs, and general improvement activities.
The Parks, Recreation, & Conservation Department is also accepting applications for the 2018 Summer Playground Program and is seeking recreation attendants. Work hours would be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This six-week program for kids ages 5 to 13 takes place at five playground sites in the city. It features scheduled activities, including a talent show, a carnival, and Playground Olympics. At the individual parks, there are games such as mancala, kickball, football, box hockey, and wiffle ball.
Candidates for all positions must possess a valid New York State driver’s license. Employment applications can be obtained online at www.co.chautauqua.ny.us/DocumentCenter/View/6473 or at the Parks & Rec Office on the 4th Floor of the Municipal Building, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Those hired must pass a drug test as a requirement of employment. There is no written exam required for the summer employment program.
