Crews Battle Fire At Jamestown Scrap Yard

JAMESTOWN – City firefighters were summoned to a large scrap metal fire Thursday afternoon at the Ben Weitsman of Jamestown Scrap Metal Recycling Center at 610 W. 8th St.
A Weitsman spokesperson told WNYNewsNow that the fire originally started within a pile of scrap metal. They said workers attempted to extinguish the blase with a fire extinguisher, but were unable to do so.
The spokesperson also said that scrap metal fires are uncommon, but heat is a common cause for them. City crews were called last month to battle another blaze at the facility.
Traffic is being diverted away from the facility, and 8th and Clinton Streets are currently shut down.
