WASHINGTON – As of Aug. 3, all public housing units under the auspices of Housing and Urban Development must be smoke free in all public housing units, common areas and within 25 feet of the building.
HUD is officially mandating that public housing authorities become smoke free. Banned will be the use of cigarettes, cigars, pipes and water pipes.
HUD contends it is not stopping residents from smoking, but the policy will be that no one can smoke in, or within 25 feet of, public housing units.
Public housing authorities must, prior to Aug. 3, create a smoke free policy that is board approved, upgrade the PHA plan, hold public meetings if the new rule is a major amendment to the plan, create a lease amendment detailing the policy and provide a 60-day notice of the lease to each resident.

Welcome to communist North Korea. They can’t break the Constitution but they can make it to nobody wants to live in any of these public housing offered to the public and offer better housing. This is our government slowly so that nobody will notice how we are becoming please govern country.
As a Manager for Senior/Disabled Housing I am so glad this has finally happened. The expense that we experience w/ replacing carpet, cleaning walls, and woodwork, and many other things is very hard on our limited budgets. Security Deposits do not begin to cover the costs. Also walking up and down the hallways and having to breathe in the smoke is unpleasant and possibly damaging to people’s health. In the long run more people will rent these properties because they will be cleaner and healthier.
