Local Sheriff Offers Perspective, Sentiments As Search For Police Diver Continues

MAYVILLE-Sheriff Joe Gerace says the rescuers searching for a missing Buffalo Police Diver are facing tremendous challenges.

“When you’re on a fast-moving water, it becomes very difficult and can become very hazardous,” said Gerace.

Lehner disappeared during a training exercise for underwater rescues in the Niagara River.

Gerace said police divers are unique individuals with special talents. “It’s completely unique, and it is even unique to diving in general because of the  conditions we face. It’s not what recreational divers would normally do,” he said.

Investigators say they don’t want to speculate yet about what went wrong.

The missing 34 year-old officer was a veteran of the Buffalo Police, having joined the force in 2008. Lehner’s primary duty is with the agency’s K9 Unit.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends, “Gerace said. “It’s got to be a horrific time for every one.”
