New Head Coach, Same Scheme In Place For JCC Men’s Basketball Team

JAMESTOWN – Xavier Churnac, former assistant coach for the JCC Men’s Basketball team, has been appointed the interim head coach.
During an interview with WNYNewsNow Friday afternoon, Churnac said he’s very fortunate to be the new coach, even on an interim basis.
“It feels good, It’s very exciting,” Churnac said. “Even though it’s the interim position, I’m very blessed to be in this position.” Churnac also looks forward to the team winning more games this year.
When it comes to nerves, Churnac said, “The nerves are natural, but they are good nerves. Like pre-game jitters before the first game. It’s more excitement than anything.”
Churnac plans to follow the blueprint Sisson left behind, minus some “minor tweaking” within time, in order to stick with what the players know for the rest of the season. Churnac said he’ll add more changes next season should he become the permanent head coach.
The interim coach said his recent experience on the court will help strengthen his coaching ability.
“My biggest strength is my experience as a player, and not being too far removed from the game of basketball,” Churnac said. He also plans to bring high energy to the players so that they, in return, provide energy on the court.
Churnac said his main goal is to get everyone on the team on the same page and to believe in one another as cohesiveness can raise the possibilities of winning games.
Churnac will make his head coaching debut on Wednesday night as JCC plays on the road against Lakeland Community College. Tip-off will be 7:30.
