MANILUS, NY-Troopers are celebrating 100 years of service after the department’s establishment in 1917 Tuesday.
State Police Captain Eric Balon attended a conference honoring the department’s heritage.
The foundation of New York State Police started with the story of Sam Howell, a construction foreman who was murdered in Westchester County during a payroll robbery. Howell identified his killers before he died.
The killers escaped the previously rural area. Howell’s 232 employees organized a state police department before embarking into the rural areas Wednesday, April 17th 1917.
