Sheriff Frustrated With Inability To Detect Exact Location Of Some Emergency Calls

JAMESTOWN – Sheriff Joe Gerace responded to questions on Wednesday about the ability of county dispatchers to pinpoint the exact location of residents who used cell phones to call 911.

“It’s still a very imperfect system (the 911 system), one that frustrates me tremendously when you have social media sites and places like Uber who have better ways of locating people,” Gerace said. “Until the FCC forces phone providers to utilize a better system, we’ll get longitude and latitude measurements at 150 meters, some of the time.”

“That’s not good enough. That’s not okay. It’s out of our control.”

Gerace encourages people to set up a profile on the Smart 911 app, and he’ll go into detail about the app in the video above.
