JAMESTOWN – On its way to Chautauqua Lake, the Viking ship “Norseman” almost ended its journey at the intersection of East Second Street and Winsor Street.
A truck pulling the historic vessel caught fire and had to be doused by the Jamestown Fire Department. Fire fighters responded to the call at 6:13 p.m. Thursday and were on scene for about an hour.
A source at the scene said the truck was a loss, no one was injured and that the ship, which was not apparently damaged, will make its schedule sail on Chautauqua Lake.
The ship is set to sail Friday morning and be on display at the 2018 Scandinavian Folk Festival this weekend held at JCC.
The 40-footer is a replica of a Gokstad Viking ship.
The Chautauqua Region Community Foundation awarded a grant to help pay the expense of bringing the “Norseman” to Chautauqua County.
