Youth Hockey; Great For Development, Tough On Pocketbooks

JAMESTOWN-The sport of hockey has trouble keeping children engaged, according to an internal study conducted by USA Hockey.

The study says 43% of kids usually quit the sport by the age of 9.

The cost of playing the sport may be another factor in the low participation rates.

According to several parents and grandparents who spoke with WNYNewsNow at a recent Jamestown Lakers game, between uniforms, skates and sticks,  you’re looking at spending thousands of dollars before the season even starts.

  1. While the game is more expensive than some others, the game of hockey has such a unique place in the hearts and minds who play. Lifetime friendships are forged on the ice and in the stands with people who truly become your extended family, something you cannot put a price on. In addition, the game can be enjoyed by both young and old, as evidenced by the many 60 and even 70 year olds playing on Sunday nights here in Jamestown. Some of the best times of my life, both as a child and as an adult, have come as a direct result of my involvement with the game of hockey and I enjoy every minute of passing my passion for the game onto my son and others.

  3. I think that this article is kind of an unfair depiction of our local hockey culture and to read it as an outsider or someone considering the sport of hockey for my child, a big deterrent.

Yes, hockey is expensive. But thousands prior to the start of each season, no. There are countless pieces of equipment that are traded and passed around between hockey families. Jerseys, skates, pants, etc. Younger siblings rarely if ever getting new equipment! Travel a lot, absolutely. But we carpool, share hotel expenses, pack lunches, and are resourceful in countless other ways!!! We are not all wealthy by any means. We’ve all learned and adapted life to make this game possible for our children! Ice fees are pricey but if you break it up monthly, most people pay more for their internet and cable!
To all the folks that have young ones that are interested in hockey, don’t be fooled by this article. Hockey is expensive but not out of reach!!
