MAYVILLE – WNYNewsNow learned that former Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Lieutenant James Quattrone will challenge his former boss, incumbent Joe Gerace (D), for the Sheriff’s position.
Quattrone confirmed the information Tuesday afternoon.
The County’s Republican Party will be announcing their candidate for Sheriff tonight. Quattrone acknowledged that he’ll be at the meeting, which will be held at 6:00 P.M.
Quattrone said he’s had the goal of serving as the Chautauqua County Sheriff ever since he was hired.
“It’s been on my mind since 1987, when Sheriff (John) Bentley first interviewed me, I had expressed that was a goal of mine,” Quattrone said. “It’s something through my training experience, and over the years, I’ve continued to pursue.”
“I, honestly, wasn’t sure if I really wanted to put my family through that. I’ve recently retired so I could spend time with my family, but all my kids are grown, so the timing now is good. I have the support of my wife, and I feel what I have to offer could be beneficial to the County.”
Quattrone said he made his decision around Christmas time.
“It’s not something I just decided at Christmas. I was leaning towards that (as I was) getting closer to retiring, and people were asking me,” Quattrone said. “I don’t think it’s a big surprise to people. I feel I could do a good job with collaboration.”
Quattrone is currently the Executive Director for the United Christian Advocacy Network’s (UCAN) city mission.
Sheriff Joe Gerace has served his position since 1995. Gerace defeated Republican Russell Payne in the last Sheriff’s election, which was held in 2014.
The Republicans official endorsement is expected sometime in June.
