JAMESTOWN – A basketball player who starred at Jamestown Community College and has since played in two international leagues said he has launched a new clothing line.
24-year-old Tyreek Jewell, originally from The Bronx, knew that as long as he remained focused, he would be able to leverage his incredible basketball talent with another one of his passions, fashion designing.
Last year, Jewell started a clothing line called Crown Jewell.
“This goal was a lifetime goal,”said Jewell. “I started playing basketball at the age of seven and from that point, I wanted to play basketball and own a clothing line.”
Jewell said the clothing line is a constant work in progress as he navigates the rocky road of business ownership in conjunction with his basketball career.
“Me being a professional athlete, I went through a lot to get to where I am today,” said Jewell. “Fighting against politics and overcoming obstacles, I’ve always stay level-headed.”
Jewell is not alone in this endeavor. There are a lot of professional athletes who parlay their successes in professional sports and then try their hand in business.
Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James has a full line with Nike that consists of men’s and women’s options, and also clothing plus accessories and shoes. Five-time NBA All-Star Russell Westbrook also turns out to be rather good at fashion; the Oklahoma City Thunder player created a high-line clothing line for fancy department store Barneys.
Being from New York City, Jewell said he watched other people make a name for themselves as sports stars and fashion moguls.
“Other people’s experience is something I can pull from,” said Jewell. “It’s always inspiring to see people doing what I want to do successfully.”
Tyreek said the actual brand name has a sentimental attachment.
“As I get older, the brand (Crown Jewell) is a reminder that you can do whatever you want to do,” said Jewell.
