JAMESTOWN – The Jamestown Police Department announced Tuesday that they’ve received information about skimming devices being used in the city and possibly the Town of Ellicott.
A skimming device is an electronic device (card reader) that is illegally connected to anything that is used to pay for an item with your credit or bank card such as a gas pump, ATM, or other vending type machine that would take a card.
These devices can sometimes be visible on the exterior of the gas pump or ATM but are sometimes hidden within the unit themselves.
Consumers are urged to exercise caution when using their cards on such devices to avoid becoming a victim to such thieves who are trying to steal their account information. Devices that appear to have been tampered with should not be used with your card and anyone who does see a suspicious item on a machine should contact their local police immediately.
Police say be vigilant in monitoring your bank accounts to ensure that unauthorized transactions aren’t being made. Anyone who may have been a victim to this should notify their bank and to file a
police report.
