First Defense: Lake Effect Snow On The Way

JAMESTOWN – The lake effect snow machine is all primed up and ready go after a little rest.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Lake Effect Snow for Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Southern Erie, and Wyoming Counties, going into effect at 9 PM this evening and lasting through 6 AM Friday.

As we’ve been talking about all week, a single band of lake effect snow will organize late tonight into Thursday. As the band is taking shape, it will first impact the Southern Tier. As it continues to organize, the band will move north into the Buffalo/metro.

Some computer models, including our own exclusive in-house FutureScan model, has been depicting a jog well to the north near the Lake Ontario shoreline. However, it won’t stay there for long as the winds shift the band back south into the Southern Tier late Thursday through Friday.

Updated snowfall totals: We have revised the amount of expected snow accumulation based not eh newest data. With the band producing moderate to heavy snowfall at times, a good 7 to 9 inches are likely along the highest hills of the Southern Tier. 6 to 8 possible along the lowest elevations, with 2 to 4 inches well inland away from the lake influence.

Colder air sets back in for weeks end with temps falling back down into the 20s. High pressure builds in early next week with highs back into the lower 30s with sunshine in full force.
