First Defense Weather Update: Things Have Been Quiet So Far

JAMESTOWN – So far, so good in the weather department throughout the early evening.
We’ve had a few rain showers come across the Southern Tier this afternoon and evening, but as expected, the biggest weather concerns have remained to our south and west.
With that said, the Storm Prediction Center does maintain the less-than-avaerage “Marginal” Risk for severe storms this evening and tonight.
8 PM EDT update to the Convective Outlook from the SPC.
As a strong cold front, which is now centered over Ohio, inches closer to Western New York, the winds will begin to pick up tonight. It will become very windy by tomorrow morning, as the front moves eastward. You can also see a line of thunderstorms that has taken shape ahead of the font.
The high resolution computer modeling has been consistent in a track that brings those storms to Western New York overnight tonight, although in a weaker and less unstable airmass.
It is here where the potential exists for one or two of these storms associated with that front, to tap into the stronger winds, and elevate them to strong or severe levels (a severe thunderstorm is classified by the National Weather Service as  one that is producing wind gusts 58 MPH or greater, one inch in diameter hail or lager, or a tornado, or a combination of any of those three).
Although, as stated, the upper-air dynamics over Western New York are not as juicy and violate as they are towards our south and east. We have a been in more of a stable atmosphere. However, there is just enough unstableness to produce a threat for a couple gusty thunderstorms.
As always, make sure you have a good way of getting warnings. I highly recommend a good smartphone app that is specially designed to push weather warnings. The app like is Weather Radio by WDT. We get no kickback from these guys, but it’s the best app I have found for iPhone and Android. Our entire team and our families use this app, so we can testify that it works very well.
We’ll keep you updated throughout the night on social media. Make sure you “Like” WNY News Now on Facebook, and follow me on Twitter, @HuntersWX, for all the latest information.
